Walk-about in Rome : Spanish Steps
On our way to the Spanish Steps from Trevi Fountain …
Piazza Mignanelli with Colonna dell’immacolata, erected in 1857 to commemorate Pope Pius IX’s doctrine of the Immaculate Conception ..
The Spanish Steps … bathed in early morning sunlight and a few people …
Piazza di Spagna at the foot of the Spanish Steps which was built 1723-1726 to link the Bourbon Spanish Embassy and the 16th century Trinità dei Monti to the Holy See. It is the widest staircase in Europe consisting of 135 steps
Fontana della Barcaccia in the Piazza di Spagna, sunk into the paving at the foot of the steps due to low water pressure. It was designed by Bernini’s father ..
That’s hubby on steps .. this is the photo he took … empty steps !!
Steps continue up to Viale Trinità dei Monti .. spectacular view of Rome from up there ..
We then walked along the street to the right towards Villa Medici …
We returned to this fascinating area of the city with it’s cobbled narrow streets for typical Italian fare at one of the many pavement cafés and trattoria’s and a spot of people watching !
Onward down the road towards Villa Medici ..
The Vatican City ..
I have now realised I didn’t take a photograph of Villa Medici, a 16th century villa bought by Cardinal Ferdinando de Medici in 1576, which is now home to the French Academy. Walking further along the road to Pincio Gardens, from where the above views of Rome were taken. I would have loved to have wondered around the gardens under the shade of the large trees, but we had too much of Rome to see ..
We made our way back down Pincio Hill, back to the city, to Piazza del Popolo ….. …. … … next post 🙂

I think the thing I like most about Rome is that you can’t turn yourself without bumping into a historic building or monument. There is just so much to see there. Hope you got to go to the Vatican as well.
I’ve gotta start saving.
Yes we did – it was absolutely amazing !!! We knew we were going to do it with the tour group so we didn’t do it ourselves
You take such beautiful photos that it feels as if you are taking us along with you. I have to walk those streets…and soon.
