Below Pincio Hill lies Piazza del Popolo (the People’s Square) which was once a place of festivals and public executions, expanded into an elegant piazza in 1811-23 …

There was scaffolding all on one side, blocking a beautiful fountain, ¬†setting up for a show or concert as well as on one of the ‘twin ‘ churches – Santa Maria in Montesanto (1662-75) and Santa Maria dei Miracoli (1675-79)

Porto del Popolo (People’s Gate) ..¬† the Piazza links Via Flaminio to Via del Corso which leads to the Ancient City ..

Fountain of Neptune ..

The obelisk from Heliopolis, dating back to 10BC, honouring Ramses II was brought to Rome by Augustus.  It stands 36m high including the plinth ..

Santa Maria del Popolo, stands on one side of the piazza,¬†‘a¬†perfect primer on Roman art and architecture.¬† Masters from the Early Renaissance, High Renaissance and Baroque exercised their genius in all disciplines here : painting, sculpture, architecture and decoration’ .

A service was being conducted.  Even though we felt as if we were intruding we did take some photographs, discreetly ..

Sadly this weed and litter covered mound is the Mausoleum of Augustus which he had built in 28BC a year before he became sole ruler.¬† His ashes were placed¬†in an urn here after his death in AD 14, as were ashes of the Imperial family ….

Ahhh gelato .. just what we needed on a hot hot day !!!  I think we had a gelato every single day in Italy !!

.. this was a popular place!!!¬† People were lining up for their gelato of various sizes and amazing flavours to choose from !!!¬†¬† this was one of three long counters filled with different flavours …
