Pompeii .. page 2
Continuing from my previous post … “On the road to Sorrento … first stop, Pompeii”
Stabian Baths on Via Stabiana .. the oldest and one of three Roman baths in Pompeii. The oldest part of the Stabian baths dates back to 4th century BC. I would have loved to have wandered through the whole complex, whether it’s allowed or not, I have no idea, but our guide took us through part of it. Maybe tours are only allowed in certain areas? In my research for info (as, as I’ve said before, we went in June last year and with so much happening at home since then I have forgotten many details !!! ) .. in my research for info .. I’ve come across amazing photographs of frescoes and mosaics in the all three Baths, as well as in houses. Maybe they’re not for public viewing 🙁 Artefacts and other treasures from Pompeii are kept in the National Museum in Naples
It’s estimated that there were 20 000 inhabitants of Pompeii at the time Mt Vesuvius erupted, with the volcano sprewing poisonous gases, lava, ash and pumice-stone. Apparently it continued for 19 hours, covering Pompeii with 4-6 metres of ash and pumice. Most of the roofs of buildings collapsed under the weight of the volcanic debris. Many escaped when disaster struck but about 2 000 perished. There are only two glass cases where plaster casts are kept for viewing in the vestibule of the baths. So very sad to see them. Tragic. Petrified for eternity
The main street leading from the port to the city …
Most pavements were laid with marble, still evident today ..
In between the large cobble stones are chips of marble which reflected the moonlight at night showing the seafarers and merchants the way to the city centre ..
… there are also these signs for the seafarers and merchants … showing the way to the brothel !! ..
Sooo .. off we went … to the ‘red light’ district ..
I’m not the only one who touches walls 😉 …
Frescoes in the brothel are well preserved !
Not the most comfortable of beds !!!
Looking back from where we’d walked, making our way to the Forum …
Temple of Jupiter with Mt Vesuvius behind ..
Sacrarium of the Lares … housed the statues of Pompeii’s guardian deities, the Lares Publici
Macellum : Pompeii’s market place .. it was fronted by a portico with two money-changers’ kiosks .. (the port was a busy place with seafarers coming and going)
Would have loved to explored further .. I spotted this building through a gap in the wall while making our way down the main street to meet up with Antonella, our Tour Director …
We made our way back down the hill for a refreshing freshly squeezed lemon drink and gelato 🙂 before boarding the coach for our next destination .. . (the large pale yellow fruit are a type of lemon!)
The usual tourist trap .. I didn’t buy anything … why ? I had my genuine Mt Vesuvius pumice stones 🙂
Our next destination .. Sorrento, on the most beautiful Amalfi Coast 🙂

Truly an amazing place. Don’t worry, I also like to touch walls, rocks, trees and things. It allows the energy (whether its historic or natural) to flow through me. As for that sign to the brothel, is that a ……. oooohhhhhh
