Picturesque Italian countryside ..
.. en route to Venice via Ravenna from Assisi in Umbria, through the Appenine Mountains to the Emilia-Romagna region
An early start from Assisi …. but not before snapping a rose or two from the grounds of our hotel ..
The highway followed a portion of the River Tiber …
Thoughts of my Dad here … as we passed through the Appenines … as he had done during WWII, 68 years ago ..
Stopping for our ‘comfort break’ there were lots of these pretty blue flowers (type of cornflower maybe?)
We actually by-passed Ravenna, and made our way to the Basilica di Sant’ Apollinare in Classe, on the outskirts of Ravenna, and a lunch break ..
I know it’s yet another Basilica 😉 but this has incredibly beautiful mosaics some dating back to 6th century
