Photography wasn’t allowed in the showroom so I can’t share photos of the magnificent, and I mean truly breathtaking, ¬†Murano glassware, jewellery, lace and mask making.¬†¬† They also build gondolas (but we didn’t see this part)

Outside the glass factory there is an old gondola.  Gondolas have been part of Venice since the 11th century.   It has a slim hill and flat underside, perfectly adapted to negotiate narrow shallow canals.  A slight leftward curve to the prow counteracts the force of the oar,  preventing it from going round in circles.  In 1562 it was decreed that all gondolas be black to stop people making a show of their wealth.  For special occasions they were decorated with flowers

And sadly from then on we couldn’t take photos ūüôĀ¬†¬† The Murano Glass gallery was amazing.¬†¬† Shelves filled with amazingly beautiful glass pieces, large and small .. jaw dropping actually !!!!¬†¬†¬†¬† .. and very very expensive (for our Rand : Euro anyway)¬† I spent ages, in awe, at the beauty of each piece.¬†¬† Brilliant rainbow colours!¬†¬†¬† Please see the Murano Glass Shop website for¬†a peek at some of their amazing glassware

We bought earrings for the girls and hubby bought me this beautiful 13 cm high vase ..¬†¬† isn’t it gorgeous¬† ..

When I was a little girl, my Granny brought back, for me, after a visit to Venice, a really lovely Venetian glass bracelet.¬† Have no idea whether it was Murano, but I would think it would have been.¬† It probably was. ¬† I absolutely loved it and wore it often.¬†¬† So much so, the clasp needed repairing, but unfortunately I wore one time too many and ‘lost’ it while walking through the centre of Johannesburg, where I worked at the time, ¬†many years ago.¬† I was heartbroken.¬† It had small very pretty blue glass pieces linked together.¬† It can never be replaced.

From here, we hopped on our boat for our walk-about in the city of Venice with a local guide  .. next
