Walk-about on the colourful island of Burano
Oh my (sigh).. wished we’d had longer here … to stroll between the colourful houses … to get ‘that’ perfect shot of reflections on the canal water … to spend time marvelling at the intricate lace making … to visit the lacemaking museum .. .. ..
More time is definitely needed on the island of Burano, home to brightly coloured houses inhabited by fishermen, and well known for it’s lacework. Traditional lacemaking with needles began here in 16th century. Handmade lace is very expensive, but there’s plenty of machine-made lace which is still beautiful (this was a board – for tempting tourists like ourselves – at the dock)
We had time, before our dinner booking at Trattoria de Romano, to walk with Antonella, our Tour Director, through some of the streets. A unique and charming array of brightly coloured houses ..
Church of Santa Martino, with the leaning campanile – founded in 959 – current church built in 16th century ..
Trattoria da Romano, where we had a delicious meal, wine and fun 🙂
Neither hubby and I can remember what we ate except for the fish risotto, which was the best risotto I’ve tasted!!!!
The time came for us to leave …. at twilight. I couldn’t resist but take more photos of the characteristic houses ..
While standing on the dock waiting for our sunset cruise back to Lido di Venezia, a wedding party came drifting by ..
… and off we sailed .. into the sunset .. saying farewell to this characteristic island … (a place I would return to)
The trip back was glorious! Sun setting over the Venetian Lagoon .. a magical experience !! … next post
p.s. a good glass bottle of fine red wine would have been perfect to complete the picture 😉

One really needs a bit of time to see more than just the touristy places. See the people and how they live. What they do every day. I got to do a bit of that when I was in China and loved seeing how the people relaxed after work and on weekends.
I absolutely love the photo of the canal with the boat under the bridge surrounded by all the colourful houses.
