It wasn’t Kalky’s but wine and lunch at Steenberg was superb!

Our two night stay at The Vineyard came to an end with a leisurely scrumptious breakfast.  The plan was to make our way to the elusive Kalky’s in Kalk Bay.   I say elusive because we’ve tried to find it on a previous occasion and couldn’t, ending up at a fish restaurant (apparently) just next door!!!!   Elaine and Bryan have been there several times for, what they say, is the best fish !!!    This visit, we were determined to find the right place and have ‘the best fish’ !!!

Well .. we never got there, once again !!   Hubby asked the concierge at The Vineyard where the closest shopping centre was to buy a few things we needed.   Leaving the centre we took the wrong turning and ended up going round and round in circles in the lush suburb of Constantia!!!    ‘Totally lost’  as Elaine would say, but both hubby and I are very good with directions and eventually found our way to the main road.

First hurdle accomplished !   The concierge also gave me a basic map of the area (I had left my good maps at home 🙁 )  as we intended to pop into Steenberg for wine tasting before making our way to Kalky’s.    I also picked up a few brochures  .. one mentioned that Klein Constantia was the ‘most beautiful vineyard in the Constantia Valley’.  We’ve also tried going there on a previous visit but found it closed, so naturally we had to try again !!!   How difficult is this place to find too !!!  Basic map didn’t help much as road signs are so obscure, so once again we took the ‘scenic route’ through the Constantia Valley ending up at a garage for the second time where I asked a local for directions.   Firstly asking a petrol attendant if he knew which road to take, who said he didn’t know and promptly pointed to my hubby …  ‘ask that man’ !!!

Finally we found it!!!     After all that, we decided not to stay for wine tasting as the views were far nicer on the narrow roadway through the vineyards.   Large trees and bushes surrounded the car park of the wine tasting room and we could see that there no spectacular views whilst sipping wines.  We could have been wrong (if anyone has done the wine tasting there and had spectacular views whilst doing so, please let me know and we will go again next time !)

Finding our way to Steenberg Vineyards was far easier!!  We needed a spot of wine tasting after our scenic drive !!!    Well worth it, that’s for sure !!!!  The wine tasting area was cool and relaxing …

It was such a lovely experience that we decided to stay for lunch at the Bistro Sixteen82 – (the year the vineyard began)  –  we were not disappointed!!  Our relaxing day continued with more wine with lunch !!    Kalky’s can wait for another visit!!  Catharina’s Restaurant is upstairs with amazing views.  We must try that another time too
