Throwback Thursday : memories and highlights – 1997
Time for a TBT me thinks !! If I recall, I was in 1997 with memorable moments, and luck would have it I was about to reach October of that year. Soooo .. exactly 18 years ago hubby and I, with Elaine, we drove down to the Cape for a short holiday ..
On the way we stopped to watch crazy people bungee jumping off the Gouritz River Bridge, near Mossel Bay. The bridge was built in 1892 and since 2009 bungee jumping has stopped due to unsafe conditions of the old bridge
We stayed with hubby’s sister and brother in law, Cheryl and Bob, in Hermanus, well-known for it’s whale watching especially around this time of year. Oh my, how things have changed at the whale watching look-out. It now has a good car park and a short wall all round, making whale watching pleasurable without having to watch where you step, or doing tumble-turns on the rocks below ..
The old harbour in Hermanus. Old Harbour Museum is on the left …
Part of the skull of a Southern Right Whale …
Cape Agulhas – 6135 kms to South Pole !! (Southern-most point of Africa)
Plague marks the dividing line between Indian Ocean to the left and Atlantic Ocean to the right …
Hubby’s Mum and Dad ..
Cape Agulhas lighthouse built in 1848 ..
.. is now a museum and National Monument ..
Tea room inside …
At that time holiday homes were being built in Struisbaai, not far from Cape Agulhas. This one looked like ‘phase one’ of more to come when finances permitted ..
Tiny church (a national monument) in Struisbaai ..
Fishermen’s cottages ..
Lunch stop in Bredasdorp ..
Caledon Botanical Gardens ..
Little did we know then .. Elaine held the most beautiful King Protea on her wedding day 16 years later on 12 October 2013 ..
Back to 1997 … Mooiberge strawberry farm, Stellenbosch ..
V&A Waterfront in Cape Town …
Table Bay Hotel at the V&A Waterfront ..
We wandered through the hotel (I’m sure unheard of today with high security etc) and admired the magnificent lounge area where high teas are served …
Elaine and Mickey (at Cheryl and Bob’s)..
On our way back to Johannesburg, we stopped overnight at Kuilfontein Stable Cottages, for the very first time. Since then it’s been our regular stopover from Cape Town. I don’t think they had a family room at that time as Elaine slept on a camp bed in our room. All rooms are converted stables and were quite rustic in those days ..
The ‘Feed Room’ where meals are served, was the original feed room for horses. Tables set for dinner …
November 2014: breakfast in the ‘feed room’ 17 years later …
The main farmhouse was originally built in 1818
Next TBT post will be a train trip celebrating 100 years of train travel between Johannesburg and Bulawayo in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe)
