Lunch at 96 Winery Road

Hubby and I have been to 96 Winery Road  many times over the last 11 years my Mum has been in the Home in Somerset West, and not thinking, this time, I didn’t take decent photographs as I have taken many pics on those previous visits.  Favourite-niece-of-mine and my wine drinking buddy, Daniella, used to be one of the managers there a few years ago.

It wasn’t pleasant outside ..  a chilly wind was blowing, and inside was warm.  It’s a lovely restaurant with relaxed atmosphere and scrumptious food situated on Winery Road just off the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West

From the website ::   ” South African-influenced international cuisine with a rustic backdrop in the heart of wine country.”  ” From the start, in May 1996 it has been our goal to delight each guest with a superb dining experience in our warm, relaxing venue set in the heart of the glorious HELDERBERG countryside. We use only fresh, often organic and where possible local ingredients to prepare our dishes.

They are inspired by SOUTH AFRICAN favourites and flavours from around the world. The fresh seasonal and inspirational menu changes almost every day, the main menu four times a year.

Founded by ex-Johannesburg restaurateur Ken Forrester, Devon Valley wine maker Martin Meinert and Chef Kathy Romer- Lee, the opening was preceded by lengthy debates in Ken’s kitchen about the butternut colour of the interior and the name – Butternut? Wine plays a major role in the partners’ lives and many of the local winegrowers are regular patrons.”

All three of us …  hubby, Ian and I .. had the ‘best end of lamb’  on a bed of lentils, pieces of sausage, Yorkshire pudding and served with a red wine jus.  It was absolutely delicious and perfect for a chilly-ish day and after a morning on the mountain where we scattered our Mum’s ashes.  The two men could not resist their yummy crème brûlée for dessert and we all had filter coffee to round off a fabulous lunch.

I must look for this Ken Forrester wine here in Joburg  – Three Halves, a blend of Mourvedre-Grenache-Shiraz – it was excellent !

Enormous old tree trunk  …

I think this is a quince tree/bush ..
