We are back ….

We are back ….

Actually we’ve been home since last Tuesday, but I haven’t had the opportunity to sit down and go through my photographs or for that matter, do a blog post !

We both came home emotionally exhausted and rather tired.  Tired after a longer than usual first day travelling (we do the Cape run in two days) having been stopped at a road block on the highway at Touws River which was closed for an indefinite period due to a protest of residents, barricading the highway with themselves as well as rocks and stones.  We were told to go back to the turning-off towards either Ceres or Montagu.  We chose Route 62 to Montagu.  A lovely road traversing a part of South Africa we’ve not seen before but added approximately 2 hours to our journey and overnight stop at Kuilfontein Stable Cottages outside Colesberg.   Silly me, I should have taken photos of this very scenic road through fruit growing country, mountains and passes with my camera as well as my cellphone which I shared on Instagram.   Never mind, will do so next time.  I would love to do a more leisurely trip stopping to explore Montagu.

The following photos are from the car whizzing along the highway through the Karoo from Colesberg to Graaff Reinet in the Eastern Cape, another route we’ve not done before, and not ever stayed in Graaff Reinet

Our first few days was spent with a great friend of ours whose beloved wife and life partner (they have no children) had passed away about 3 months ago.  We had planned this trip ages ago before Carol was diagnosed with cancer and were looking forward to seeing their new home in Hartenbos near Mossel Bay.

The next few days were in Hermanus, Western Cape staying with hubby’s sister Cheryl, and Bob.  Always lovely to spend time with them in this coastal town where whales frolick in the Bay at this time of the year.  Hemel en Aarde Valley is also wonderful to drive through stopping for a spot of wine tasting 🙂

Our destination was Somerset West with my family, an hour’s drive from Hermanus.  Always my favourite place as I had travelled down to see my Mum several times a year over the 11 years she spent in an old age home there.  Now my beloved sister in law is battling cancer again.  An emotional time and very precious.

We did however go ‘ out and about ‘ with photos to follow in forthcoming posts.  Watch this space 😉
