Chapel on the hill in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

Our Cape holiday Oct/Nov 2017

As I mentioned in my previous post … our next stop on our drive through the picturesque Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (Afrikaans for ‘ heaven and earth ‘ .. rather apt) …  is the ‘chapel on the hill’ which we’d spotted on various drives through this beautiful valley.  It turned out to be a wine lounge for Ataraxia Wines !  .. but I must say, it’s a perfect wedding venue.  Our sommelier told us they often have brides-to-be driving up the long winding gravel road up to the top of the hill only to find out it’s a wine lounge and has nothing to do with weddings !!!   I think they need a sign at the gate way down in the valley – if there was one, we didn’t spot it.

But before we get there, I took snapshots through the windscreen and windows of the car.  It’s too pretty not to share –

Leaving Creation Wines …

Once you turn off the main road, the gravel driveway to Ataraxia winds through pine trees, natural vegetation and vineyards.  Not bad photos whilst sitting in the back seat of the car !!!

(Fred wasn’t in the back seat .. ha ha ha !  .. as I write this I have the old .. very old.. song in my head ..   “””keep your mind on the drivin’, keep your hands on the wheel, keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead, we’re having fun, sittin’ in the back seat, huggin’ and kissin’ with Fred .. da dooby doom doom.. .. ..  “””  )

Ataraxia is Greek for ” a serene state of mind, free from worry and preoccupation “, and that’s how you feel, way up on the hill with the most spectacular views !!

View from the carpark ..

Peak of Babylon’s Tower mountain range …

Chardonnay was my favourite .. so we bought a bottle 🙂
